The Advantages of Houseplants are not just Aesthetic Leave a comment

We can all appreciate the beauty of a potted plant or delicious monster in a home or office. But what you might not know is that the benefits of having houseplants in your living and working spaces are not just aesthetic.

Robin Wall Kimmerer, American author and distinguished teaching professor of environmental and forest biology, states that “in some native languages, the term for plants translates to “those who take care of us””. We could not agree more. Research suggests that houseplants improve both health and wellbeing.

Here are some of the most compelling reasons why:

– Plants reduce stress levels, both physiological and psychological. They have a calming effect – those living and working with houseplants in their space are observed to have lowered blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels (stress hormone).

– Studies investigating greenery or flowers in hospital settings showed that having plants around lead to faster healing, and increased tolerance of pain.

– Plants aid mental and emotional health – therapists sometimes prescribe gardening to ease symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other conditions.

– Plants are linked to better concentration, sharpened focus, and being more attentive.

– Plants may boost productivity, creativity, and mood in the workplace.

– Plants provide allergy relief (granted that the plant does not have pollen or spores) by acting as natural filters and result in less dust and mould in indoor spaces.

– Plants purify and improve the quality of indoor air by soaking up volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

–  Plants add moisture to the air – making a space more comfortable, and yourself less likely to catch a cold or flu.

– Plants create extra oxygen which might lead to better sleep.

Research suggests that some plants may also have anti-radiation properties, and assist in absorbing ambient radiation in the home. Some of the best radiation absorbing houseplants include cacti, snake plants, and aloe vera.
